Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. Great sibling dynamics!

My daughters and I were brainstorming good sibling tales and realized in many of the ones we like, the sibling interaction isn’t central to the story (like Penderwicks), so that changes the kind of conflicts and dynamics.

One of my girls mentioned the Weasley siblings—that’s a great group. There are also some good sibling dynamics in Patricia Wrede’s Frontier Magic series. And I love the sibling interaction in Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility.

Weasleys! That's a good one.

The Wingfeather Saga, Mari in the Margins, and the Railway Children are also some other standouts that portray siblings really well!

I also like the March sisters in Little Women because each sister has distinct strengths and weaknesses, but they all learn to love each other.

I like Meg and Charles Wallace in A Wrinkle in Time. Although Charles Wallace is incredibly gifted, it's Meg and her fierce love of her brother which saved the day.

Peace Like a River by Leif Enger and The Last Sweet Mile by Allen Levi are both really well written sibling relationships.

I love this so much. And chuckled at all the right parts. The Pevensies and the Penderwicks are great examples of sibling relationships done right. The sibling dynamic is a unique one, even to the extent that each sibling relates to the other siblings in the family differently. Thanks for highlighting the importance of not turning to easy stereotypes when writing about brothers and sisters. Cheers!

I recently read Hello, Beautiful which walks through the relationships of these four sisters from high school to early 50s. It broke me. Like I literally ugly-cried. And when I finished, I couldn't pick up another book for nearly a month. It was heart-breaking AND heart-warming, and I want everyone who has siblings, though namely sisters, to read it 💞

Perhaps writers are all still traumatized by all their sibling relationships? 🤣
